Overview

This policy explains what the University of South Padre Island and Lower Laguna Madre, which we call SPIU or the university below, collects about you, why, who can see it and what control you have. It covers 2spiu.com, 4uspi.com, the university app and the emails we send. We have tried to make it something you would actually read.

The short version

  • We collect what we need to run the university: your name and email, your payments, the receipts and photos you submit, your progress and your chats with Betty.
  • Your receipts and posts are private. Reviewers see them. Other students do not.
  • We do not sell your information, and there is no advertising or tracking on our sites.
  • You can delete your account yourself, from Settings, at any time.

What we collect

Before you enroll

  • When you join the 2SPIU waitlist we save your first and last name, email address, phone number, the fact that you agreed to receive opening updates, and the time you signed up.
  • When a business joins the 4USPI list we save the contact name, business name and email address.
  • To stop automated abuse, the waitlist keeps a scrambled version of your network address that we cannot turn back into the address itself.

Your account

  • Your name, email address and phone number, and, if you sign in with Google, the name and email Google shares with us.
  • Your date of birth, which we ask for to confirm you are 18 or older.
  • The six digit sign in codes we email you, which expire quickly.
  • Anything you add in Settings: a profile photo and the name you want on your diploma.
  • Your theme choice, which is kept in your own browser and never sent to us.

Enrollment and payments

  • Which enrollment option you chose, how many student places you purchased, what you paid and when, and the email addresses of students you invite to those places.
  • Payment details are handled by Stripe. We receive confirmation that a payment succeeded, the amount and a reference. We never receive or store your full card number.

Your progress

  • The receipts you photograph, with the business, date and amount they show.
  • The posts you make for a degree, such as a catch with its species, length and weight, a stop on your road trip, or a moment on the beach, and any photos with them.
  • Your credits, who confirmed each one and when, your milestones and your completed degrees.

Betty

  • What you type to Betty and what she answers. Your messages, with the parts of your record she needs to answer well, are sent to our AI provider to generate the reply.
  • Course narration is generated as audio by a voice provider from the course text, not from anything you say.

Referrals

  • Your Action Jackson link and code, the enrollments that came through it, the commissions you earned and their status.
  • If you set up payouts, the status of the Stripe account you connect. Stripe collects the identity and bank details it needs to pay you, under its own privacy policy.

Pillar Businesses

  • The business name, location, description and contact details the owner gives us, and the owner’s account.
  • The receipts students upload from that business, the owner’s review decisions and the resulting visit totals.

The store

  • What you ordered, what you paid, and the shipping name and address you give us.

Help requests

  • The topic and message you send through the Help page, and your email address so we can reply.

Technical records

  • Our servers keep ordinary request logs, including network addresses and the pages and actions requested, for 30 days to keep the service running and to investigate problems.
  • The sites and the app keep you signed in and remember small preferences using your browser’s own storage. We set no advertising or analytics cookies, and we use no third party trackers.

How we use it

  • To run the university: your account, your enrollment, your credits and your degrees.
  • To review what you submit and to confirm or reject credits.
  • To pay referral commissions and to fulfil store orders.
  • To send you the emails the service needs: sign in codes, confirmations, review decisions, notifications and replies to your help requests.
  • To send waitlist members opening updates, which you agreed to when you signed up and can stop at any time.
  • To prevent fraud, abuse and fake submissions.
  • To keep the financial records that tax and accounting rules require, and to meet other legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal information, we do not share it for advertising, and we do not build profiles of you for anyone else.

Who can see what

This is the part most people care about, so here it is plainly.

  • Other students see nothing of yours. Your receipts, photos and posts are private submissions, not a feed.
  • A Pillar Business owner sees the receipts uploaded from their own business, including the photo and the name on your account. They do not see your contact details, your other receipts or your posts.
  • University reviewers and administrators see what you submit and your account details, so that they can review credits, run the program and help you.
  • If you enroll through someone’s Action Jackson link, that person sees your name and email address in their referral list, so they know their referral counted. If you later delete your account, they see "Deleted account" instead.
  • If someone pays for your student place, you can see who paid for your enrollment, and the person who paid can see the status of the enrollments they purchased.

Companies that help us run the university, each only with what their job needs.

  • Google Cloud and Firebase host the sites, the app, the database and your uploads, and handle sign in.
  • Stripe processes payments and referral payouts.
  • Mailgun delivers our emails.
  • Google also provides the Gemini language model behind Betty’s replies.
  • ElevenLabs generates the voice for course narration.
  • Printify makes and ships store orders and receives the shipping details for them.

We may also share information when the law requires it, to protect the safety or rights of our students, businesses or the university, or if the university is ever reorganised or transferred, in which case this policy would still apply to your information.

How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as your account is open. When you delete your account, access ends immediately and background cleanup removes your profile, your contact details, your photos and uploads, your chats with Betty, your mailing address and any notifications not yet sent.

A few things have to stay.

  • Confirmed credits and a Pillar Business’s visit totals remain as part of the record of the program, without your name attached.
  • Payment, commission and order records are kept for as long as tax and accounting rules require, with access limited to the people who need them.
  • Server logs expire on their own after 30 days.

Waitlist signups are kept until enrollment opens and for a while after, so that we can write to you when it does. You can ask to be removed at any time. Uploads you start but never finish are cleaned up after a short grace period.

Your choices and rights

  • See and correct your details in Settings at any time.
  • Delete your account from Settings. No need to ask us.
  • Ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete something we hold, through the Help page. We will confirm it is you asking and answer within 45 days.
  • Stop opening updates by replying to any of them, or by asking through the Help page. Emails the service itself needs, such as sign in codes and receipt decisions, continue while your account is open.

Depending on where you live, privacy law may give you further rights, such as the right to know, to delete, to correct, to obtain a copy, or to complain to a regulator. We honour these requests from everyone, wherever they live, and we will never treat you differently for making one.

How we protect it

Everything moves over encrypted connections. Your photos are stored privately and opened only through short lived, signed links. Location and camera metadata is stripped from every photo when it is uploaded. Access to your information is limited to the people who need it to do their job. No system is perfectly secure, and if a security incident ever affects your information we will tell you as the law requires.

Children

SPIU is for adults. You must be 18 to enroll, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us information, tell us through the Help page and we will remove it.

Where your information lives

The university is based in Texas and our systems run in the United States. If you use SPIU from elsewhere, your information is processed in the United States, where privacy law may differ from the law where you live.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy we will post the new version here with a new date, and for changes that matter to you we will also email the address on your account.

How to reach us

Questions about this policy, or about your information, go through the Help page in the university app. It works whether or not you are signed in, and your message goes straight to the people who run SPIU.
